ALTERED BOOKS

Altering  books  has  its roots in the  medieval period when original   text   on   vellum  or parchment  was  rubbed out, scraped  off  or  covered  up for new work.

In  the  same  way,  today,  a discarded    book    can    be transformed  into  a  work  of art.   The  existing  pages  of the book  become the artist's canvas.   Some   pages   are removed to reduce bulk, and sections  are glued together, giving  stability.  The existing text     can    be    completely obliterated,   or   used  as   a background,  or   inspiration.

It's an  inexpensive  art  form that  makes  use of  recycled materials     and     creatively combines  the   written   word with art.  For  more   informa-tion,   see   the  International Society    of    Altered    Book Artists:  www.alteredbookartists.com
